Sleep was my gateway into essential oils. We all have that one thing that leads us into a holistic approach when we are looking for solutions. And sleep was mine. Desperate sleep. 3 years of not sleeping.
You see, I was pregnant from July 2014-April 2015 and then blessed with a child who was just awake from the moment she was born. That’s not an exaggeration. She didn’t nap for almost a full year unless I was pacing around the house while baby-wearing or we were driving in a car, or the stroller stayed moving at all times.
Night time brought no relief as well. After 2 months old she went from sleeping 10-12 hour stretches to waking every 1-2 hours all night long. We tried everything under the sun. Sleep training, black out curtains, white noise, lovies, strict “sleepy routine”, night weaning from breastfeeding. You name it we tried it for 18 long and exhausting months, as a full time working mom, with a husband on nights. I was losing my mind.
Enter in Serenity. You see, my oldest daughter was meant to be “different”. She doesn’t fit into typical “baby” molds. She does her own thing and her will power will bring the strongest of us down. She’s a Taurus, and so if you aren’t prepared to fight until the death, don’t even bother fighting her will power. She will out last you. She was no match for Serenity essential oil though. Diffusing that before bedtime meant I got 4-5 hour stretches instead of 1-2. And that oil saved my life and my sanity.
When people say they have problems sleeping I give them 3 oils to start with:
Because chances are, if they are coming to me for sleep, they’ve already tried a myriad of things and we need to pack a big punch. Serenity is our restful blend – the specific blend of oils is much more potent than just the traditional Lavender and gives the body system plenty of support to help calm and soothe.
Balance is our ground blend. Much like Serenity, it’s specific oils found in the blend help meet several needs of our energy levels to help bring us down to center and instill quiet and grounding effects.
Wild Orange, odd right? Usually used for energy- some people need the burst of energy to calm down (my daughter is one of these people), and so she needs the citrus oils to help lower her energy level and “buzz” as she calls it in order to relax. Wild Orange is the perfect compliment for this and few people think to try it for sleep.
Other oils can include diffusing calming essential oils, such as Lavender or Bergamot, before bedtime to create a relaxing atmosphere. dōTERRA Balance, Breathe, Cilantro, Clary Sage, Melissa, Sandalwood, dōTERRA Serenity, Thyme, and Roman Chamomile, are all great oils to diffused to promote peacefulness. Alternately, they can also be taken internally to soothe your body and improve sleep (as adults).
I am a wellness advocate with dōTERRA and my husband and I receive compensation and bonuses from dōTERRA. Interested in learning how essential oils can financially help you and your family? Contact me here
